Write and Revise Contest: Part 1

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 10, 2012, 7:37 PM

You thought we were going to let you rest after the Summer Contest, huh? Wrong! We're back with a two-parter to hopefully get you both creating and editing, as all good writers must. This contest is brought to you by VertigoArt, who has rejoined the ranks of DLD as our contest and affiliate admin! :eager: Please go give him some love.

Part 1: Go Wild!

The first part of the contest is relatively simple: write something. It can be a journal, a stream of consciousness, a scrap of a poem, an idea you've had for ages or one that comes to you in a burst of inspiration.

This part of the contest is open  from August 11th to September 11th, 2012 October 11th, 2012.

If you need some help getting started check out prompts set up by our affiliate groups, Live-Love-Write listed in their blog here: live-love-write.deviantart.com… and theWrittenRevolution archived here: thewrittenrevolution.deviantar… In addition, IrrevocableFate regularly lists prompts from various groups in her Love dA Lit articles.

Rules

:bulletblue: Entries must include a link to this contest article in the artist's comment.
:bulletblue: Entries must be written specifically for this contest, submitted to dA on or after August 1, 2012.
:bulletblue: Entries must adhere to dA's Submissions and Etiquette policies.
:bulletblue: Mature content is allowed, provided it is marked with all appropriate flags.
:bulletblue: 2 entries per deviant; collaborations are not allowed.
:bulletblue: For this part of the contest, there are no length restrictions. Keep in mind that you'll be revising and expanding one of your entries for the second part of the contest.

How to Submit

To submit to the contest, first make sure your deviation follows all of the rules listed above. Once you've check that, you can submit your piece to the Write and Revise Part 1 folder in Daily-Lit-Deviations. You do NOT need to be a member of the group to submit. But we'd love it if you did join! :D

Judging

Entries should have correct grammar (unless stylistic considerations enhance the piece) and good flow. Entries will be judged primarily on impact to the reader.

Your judges are: :iconvertigoart::iconthetaoofchaos::iconliliwrites:

Seems like this could be fun, count me in. :la:

I've submitted my entry to the folder. Hope you accept it. =D

I'd also like to join the group if possible, though I'm planning on starting a separate account for my fiction and moving to that soon. XD

I also might have a second entry for you soon, I seem to be prolific lately, that's not like me at all. XP

I'm just wondering, can we write fanfiction for this? :)
And also, by "stream of consciousness" and "a scrap of a poem" you're implying that we can submit unfinished works?

Unfinished works, yes. But no fan fiction. Sorry.

I've tried to submit a piece to your group and I'm being told that I am NOT allowed to submit there. I am not a member of your group, but you state that I don't have to be to submit. HELP! please.

Strange. All of the settings should let you submit. Try again, and if it doesn't work send a note to the group and we'll invite your submission into the gallery. :)

So do we not have to do any editing on our submission for the first part? (I'm assuming this because the second part is all about editing and revising?)

That is correct! Though your first draft should be mostly free of grammar/spelling errors so we can read it easily. :)

And, if I may add, the video would speed up, stop, speed up, then stop again, and somewhere at the end show a before and after Word Document of the complete version of the poem and the incomplete, and how I brought all my ideas together.

Would I be able to submit an already-finished new work I have to d.A., and in the Artist's Comment link viewers to a YouTube video that shows the evolving of a poem as I edit it in real-time, showing how I move my scattered ideas around in the Word Document, until it's done? People are always doing that for visual artwork so why not the written word?

Let me know if this would be acceptable.

I can't promise I'll be able to participate in this though due to my unfortunate tight schedule, but if this is allowed I'll do my best.

Thank You

If the work is already edited, it isn't applicable to this part of the contest. However, you can start a fresh work, submit the initial write to the contest, then do a similar video for the editing process of that one.

Well what I meant was, and sorry for the confusion, is I am working on my newest poem now but during its development I want to show how it came to completion in one video as I'm not finished with it yet. Therefore what I meant by already-finished is by the time I upload it to d.A. both the poem and the video will be made.

Oh. Well that ought to work out alright. But I must warn you that the video will NOT have a bearing on the judges decision. Only the quality of the lit.

Still I wanna see that video. :D You'll be attaching it to the first draft or the rewrite for the second part of the contest?

I'll figure something out. Yeah, that's how I would do it. I would submit my draft on d.A. as a deviation first on how the ideas, etc. started off, then in the video in the Artist's Comment it will show how those ideas matured into something greater.

And yes, I'm aware of quality. That's all I produce is quality literature and put my best foot forward. I just thought it would be unique to include a real-time video, that's all.

That said, I cannot promise I'll absolutely be entering this as much I really, really want to. If I don't find the time for it then perhaps I'll sent you a Note to the deviation and video because I was planning on doing a video like this anyway since I've seen no one do it.

Keep in mind that you'll be revising and expanding one of your entries for the second part of the contest.

Why does revising equal expanding and not contracting? Many times (most times?) it's judicious pruning that makes the piece.

i agree. "expanding" might imply that you started with an idea and added to the complexity. but you could just as easily have started with a huge jumble and you would then refine it. i believe both options are viable here.

while i am inclined to agree, many of my first drafts —especially of longer stories— are "skeletons" that i later return to and apply detail.
