Questions

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing.

For me, writing is a catharsis. Having had a bit of a rough family life growing up I started writing to get my thoughts and emotions down. Originally, I didn't think I'd go anywhere with my poetry (quite honestly, I've gone back and looked at it, it was horrendous), but lately I've been working on a side project and I am debating a poetry book. My poems come sporadically, they range from comedic to downright morbid. I write when I'm inspired and often go for months without writing anything I deem fit for reading. Recently, I've gotten into a bit of prose and I am working on a novel as well as several short stories. Now for a random fact! I hate commas! I have no idea how to place them.

2. How do you feel about dA as a literature community?

All in all, I think a lot of people don't have the time or the patience for reading literature. I know that I've been guilty of "Faving and running" and I hate to admit it, but sometimes I just don't have the time to read much prose or long poetry. In the end, I think that the literature community could use more groups such as yours where the literature is appreciated. However, I appreciate all of my avid and incredibly supportive watchers for keeping me going. I think without them I'd have given up years ago.

3. Would you like to tell us more about the poetry book you may be working on?

I did tell my watchers I was working on a "Secret Project" and I have been! I'm collecting many of the poems I've edited and have not posted yet. To be honest, it's still in the works. I haven't been able to decide upon a theme, a title, or even a pseudonym to go by! Since I haven't yet collected all of the poems I want yet, it's still in the process. When I find a common theme I might then consider publishing it.

4. There's a folder in your gallery for "songs and lyrics" - how is that different from poetry? Is writing a song a completely different process than writing a poem?

Songs and lyrics, in my opinion are totally different from poetry! For instance, you have to be able to write in a way that would make the lyrics easy to sing. As well as a writer, I'm also a singer so as I walk I find myself singing lines that I've thought of. I also compose music, but for some reason I've never tried writing music for my lyrics or lyrics for my music. In my opinion, poetry and lyrics are very different, but that may just be because I tend to lean towards free-verse poetry.

5. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given as a writer?

"You're your own worst critic"

This is very true indeed! I find that sometimes something I absolutely detest is like by others and vice versa! Just because you may not think it's good, try editing it, finding new lines you like and just go for it, maybe you'll grow to like it.

"Use interesting and different metaphors"

I can't stress this enough! It gets boring reading the same metaphors, and many seem very cliche. A lot of the time I see writers struggling to grasp this concept. In all honesty I still have some problems with this myself, but if you work at it, I'm sure you can do it!

Finally: ""Write for yourself!"

Don't let others dictate what you write. Sometimes it gets stressful if you write for others, not saying it's bad, but take a break sometimes and write for the sake of writing. :)

Breathe in the AtmosphereFor my uncle, may he rest in peace.
In the meadows
on their mountain tops
where the lilacs sing your name
and the daffodils waltz
with snowdrops
sun settles
on your window pane.
In the place where
the clouds meet the ground
where the starlight blooms.
Where the trees listen
yet make no sound
while a brand new day
looms.
Chorus: In the meadows,
on their mountain tops,
I know I'll be there with you someday.
And I will sway
through the dew-soaked grass
until I breathe in
the atmosphere.
In the valleys,
on their mountain tops,
where the wildflowers grow.
Where the sun melts
all your teardrops,
and a soft breeze begins to blow.
In the place where
lilies are pure and white
and the wind answers your prayers.
Where daydreams
become real life
where you're calmed by gentle airs.
Chorus: In the meadows,
on their mountain tops,
I know I'll be there with you someday.
And I will sway
through the dew-soaked grass
until I breathe in
the atmosphere.
Bridge: Let the trees take you by the arm
