Sestina by bringyourownbomb

Sestinas are difficult to manage at the best of times,
nevermind writing a good one. bringyourownbomb chose
some solid words for her form and makes use of some
clever wordplay to get the job done.

Tax CollectorsIn a foreign country,
everything is weird.
Where I come from,
government is feared.
I don't know
how it came to mind,
to throw mangoes
to pass the time.
The Germans weren't happy
because of stolen loot,
so the tax collectors
got hit by fruit.

Tax Collectors by fullofenergy

From the suggester:  Readers are in for a lot rhythm
and fun with this poem, which the author was challenged to
write for a prompt of disparate words. Like waitstaff,
I'll say "Enjoy."

Volpi. You will find that the story you tell
is very rarely your own. In Lucca,
even the smallest pebbles
breathe in the warm sunlight.
Knotted stones and cobbled roads
beat out a paper-dry heartbeat heat –
my city breathes in and out,
inhales sparrow air.
It's writing a story.
You are the pen.
You will find that in Lucca
the daisy chains forge fire
in side streets and back alleys.
Teenagers intertwine. Tell me,
odd flower, are you still closed?
Here we are colored wax;
the heat of the city melts us.
We run into each other, rhapsody
of pigments. Operas are our specialties.
Open up; feel the reds.
If not, try and see them. There is a place
of deep knife marks, a street
long as midnight –
you may learn something there.
Valentina's voice glimmers like red wine.
You may enjoy intoxications. Still,
know alcohol has no story
and will swallow your own.
Find the sign with the wolf on it.
You'll know the place. Epiphanies ring true as church-bells.
Lucca still guides the wanderers

Volpi. by winterkate

It is not a locale that has magic, danger, depth or purpose
as much as it is a catalyst to shake those things alive within us.
With this poem, the writer delivers such a place, both outside and in, and
with rare skill.

The Watchmaker by Rhytor

The writer takes inspiration from old work
and makes it new in this  fresh, edge-of-your-seat
mystery. Great descriptions intensify the depth
of a possibly horrifying end.

Endings"So, that's it?" I say.
Pushing away from the table, I get up and move to stand before the kitchen slider, beer once cold, gone warm, almost forgotten in my hand.  I watch the sun set on the oak trees that line the west side of our field, the chromatic orange blaze making the trees seem like an x-ray of color; three robins bob and dart across the lawn looking for worms.
"I guess so" she says, voice flat, decided. "What else is there to discuss?"
I shake my head, shrug my shoulders absently, letting her question hang. I expected more.  After twenty two years, more than half my life was wound up with hers. To have things end so calmly, so….easy…. I had expected tears and raised voices, long put away resentments brought up and out to bare. But this….shaking my head again, I take a pull from the beer and find it sour. Two of the robins had left and the third just stood there in the grass, his head tilting left, right, up and down in that almost mechanical

Endings by Eremitik

This brief flash fiction reveals worlds
behind a few choice words. When a couple confronts
the idea of ending, it can even be noticed in
a bit of bird-watching by one.
