YouInventedMe is a senior member of deviantART and a member of the Literature Community we would be less without.
VertigoArt: Thank you for taking the time to interview with me. We will start nice and simple: when and why did you join deviantART?
YouInventedMe: well, according to my user activity tab, I joined DA on October 13, 2005. that puts me at just over 7 years. oh my! I initially joined so I'd have a place to stockpile the various terrible poems, and not quite so terrible song lyrics, that I'd been scribbling for a while.
VertigoArt: When did you first start writing and why did you pick up that therapeutic pencil/pen?
YouInventedMe: I've had an interest in writing since middle school. I had some teachers who encouraged me, and though writing took sort of a back seat to theater for a little while, it eventually lead to me writing lyrics for bands I was in (in high school/college/post-college), which then turned into writing straight poetry and hip hop verses for open mic nights.
VertigoArt: When were you made a senior?
YouInventedMe: I had to go back to my journal entries to get the exact date. turns out I was made a senior December 23, 2009. a nice little Chrismukkah present from the staff.
VertigoArt: Why do you believe you were made a senior of the community? Do you believe you deserved it or was it a long time coming?
YouInventedMe: honestly, to this day I'm not really sure how the whole senior thing works. while it was certainly nice to receive the honor, I can't say that I was actively lobbying for
or even waiting for it quietly. I assume it was given for my activities with various literature groups and for the large amount of collaborative works I've worked on with various writers and visual artists. that and the secret blood pact I had to make with... oh, never mind.
VertigoArt: In a few words tell us what a senior member is and what they are supposed to do for deviantART.
YouInventedMe: again, this is all a bit of a mystery to me. personally, I try to participate in the literature community as much as my schedule allows. I'm a contributor to Word-Smiths and TheSimulacrum, a member of several other lit groups, and I'm always trying to work with/expose people to new/underexposed deviants here on the site.
VertigoArt: Have you ever stopped listening to the voice in your head and refused to write?
YouInventedMe: I've never "refused" to write, but I certainly have my quiet periods. I write whenever the need grips me, but that's not a perpetual thing... except when it is. during my "down times", I often find collaboration is a good way to jumpstart the system.
VertigoArt: Tell me of a time when you just had to write, if you didn't you felt that your head would explode.
YouInventedMe: for examples of that, you can look at almost any solo poem I've ever written... and many of the collaborations, too. I can't say the outcome is always worthwhile, but when the need to write strikes me, I try to get pen to paper (or fingers to laptop keys) immediately. there are very real physical and mental sensations that I need to purge.
VertigoArt: I have annoyed you enough even though there are so many more things people want to know about the elusive Shane. Can you quickly tell me about your nickname and why you chose a picture from Naked Lunch as your avatar?
YouInventedMe: I chose the Naked Lunch icon for the simple reason that it's one of my favorite books. the Beat writers (particularly Ginsberg and Burroughs) have been a big source of inspiration for me, especially in the beginning of my poetry writing phase. Naked Lunch in particular has that marvelous, and very distinct, surreal feeling to it. my username was inspired by Bukowski, another favorite (and early influence) of mine.
VertigoArt: Thank you Shane. Is there anything else you would like to say?
YouInventedMe: just that I am constantly amazed and very, very appreciative that anyone here has ever had/continues to have any interest in my nonsense. thanks for the last 7 years, deviantART.
